ACC is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Miyeko Murase on February 12, 2025, at the age of 100. As a professor, historian, curator, and author, Murase furthered scholarship and opportunities for generations of those engaged in Japanese art. Among many honors, Murase was the Takeo and Itsuko Atsumi Professor Emerita of Japanese Art at Columbia University and served as a Special Consultant for Japanese Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Murase’s influential and impactful work was recognized at some of the highest levels throughout her career. On November 30, 2010, at the home of the Consul General of Japan, Murase was conferred in the name of the Emperor, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, and Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, an order of merit established in 1888. This award recognized her contributions to Japanese art and culture as a teacher, scholar, and curator.
During Murase’s ACC fellowship, she travelled from the U.S. to conduct art history research at Buddhist cave sites in China in the spring of 1987. We are honored to have contributed to her impactful and distinguished career through cultural exchange and international dialogue.
Our sincere condolences to Murase’s family and loved ones. Read more about Miyeko Murase’s life and career here.
