Shadow Ballads brings together leading performers of from Appalachia and Indonesia to relate lived experiences from opposite ends of the world. The performance combines crankies (American folk theater depicting ballads on rolls) with traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry to relate connections between cultures and their shared environment. Music is provided by American and Indonesian musicians bringing together the string-band traditions from both cultures. The event is family friendly, and the audience will be invited on stage afterward to experience the puppets and crankies for themselves.
