In retreat, artist Marika CONSTANTINO (ACC 2018) guides us into her inner landscape through a quiet and intimate series, which teases out the concepts of the words “retreat” and “treat.”

Set against shades of grey, black and white, Constantino sensitively depicts the idea and sensation of seclusion, refuge and solitude in one’s lifecycle. Through repetition, breaks, texture, and color, Constantino cleverly communicates the depth and richness of solitude and seclusion within ourselves and the world. It is soul-affirming without being loud. Impactful without being hard. The definitive lines of the triangular and rectangular shapes intermix with loops caught within themselves, challenging any singular notion of journey. She is showing us how clarity and structure is often wrapped within winding paths, nudging us to question our interpretation of roadmaps as being linear, and fate versus destiny."
