「East-West Dialogues イースト ウエスト ダイアローグ」は、毎年、⻄洋とアジアの芸術文化のリーダーを招いて開催されるレクチャーシリーズです。 クリティカルシンキング(理論的客観的思考と理解)の発展と、アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシル (ACC) の活動ミッションでもある異文化間の対話、 交流、理解の促進を目指すイベントです。今回は、建築家の槇文彦氏、ボストン・ジャパン・ソサエティ名誉会⻑、作家、映像プロデューサーのピーター・グリーリ氏をお招きし、それぞれ米国と日本での半世紀以上にわたる活動の体験から、これからの国際社会における異文化交流・理解への鋭い眼差しを伺います。どうぞ、ご期待下さい。

アジアン・カルチュラル・カウンシル(ACC)は、米国とアジアにおける芸術家や芸術の専門家の調査研究活動への支援により、国際交流、異文化理解、尊敬の促進を目指す、米国の非営利財団です。

◇プロフィール◇
槇 文彦 Fumihiko Maki
1928年東京都に生まれる。1952年に東京大学工学部建築学科を卒業、又1954年にハーバード大学大学院の修士課程を修了し、後に両校で教鞭をとる。
1965年に株式会社槇総合計画事務所を東京に設立。その代表として今日に至る。事務所の活動は日本の外、北南米、アジア、ヨーロッパに至る。槇はアメリカ建築家協会(AIA)、アメリカ芸術科学アカデミー(AAAS)の名誉会員でもある。
主なる作品はヒルサイドテラス(1969〜92)、スパイラル(1985)、幕張メッセ(1989〜95)、京都国立近代美術館(1986)、日本刀剣博物館(2018)。海外では4WTC、紐育(2013〜2018)、MITメディアラボ(2009)、アガカーン美術館、トロント(2014)、 メディアコープ、シンガポール(2016)、ビハール州立美術館(2017)、深圳海上世界文化芸術センター(2017)、アガカーン センター、ロンドン(2018)等がある。槇文彦は国内外で数々の賞に輝くなど高い評価を得ている。主な受賞歴は、 プリツカー賞、UIAゴールドメダル、プリンス・オブ・ウェールズ都市デザイン賞を1993年、高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞建築部門受賞1999年、AIAゴールドメダル2011年に受賞している。又英語版の著作としては1964年にセントルイスのワシントン大学から集合体の研究、2008年には建築と都市に関するエッセイ集Nurturing DreamsをMIT Press、そして2018年City with a Hidden Past(見えがくれする都市の英語版)を鹿島出版会から出版。

ピーター・グリーリ Peter Grilli
ニューヨーク生まれ。1947年から1959年まで東京で育つ。
東京のアメリカンスクールで教育を受けた後、ハーバード大学にて修士および学士課程終了。1961-63年には早稲田大学に在籍し、東京大学でも大学院研究を行った。1970-75年には東京とニューヨークにてウェザーヒル出版社の編集者として勤務。その後10年以上に渡りニューヨークのジャパン・ソサエティにて教育、映画、パフォミングアーツのディレクターを務めた。
その後、PBSの日本プロジェクトディレクターを務めるとともに、メディアや知的コミュニケーションに特化したコンサルタント会社を設立。コロンビア大学のドナルド・キーン日本文化センターにて4年間ディレクターとして勤務の後、2000年にはボストン・ジャパン・ソサエティのプレジデントに就任。現在は、同ボストン・ジャパン・ソサエティ名誉会⻑であるとともに、スペシャルアドバイザー、およびグローバルカルチャーセンター会⻑。作家、ドキュメンタリー映画プロデューサー、そして、文化全般、映画、演劇ダンス、教育、メディア、国際交流の分野における日本と日米の友好関係に特化したコンサルタントとして活躍。2003年には日米の文化交流への貢献に対し、日本国政府から勲三等瑞宝章を受賞。また、2009年にはジャパン・ソサエティ重光葵賞(Shigemitsu Mamoru Award)を受賞。

East-West Dialogues is an annual lecture series that engages distinguished thought leaders from the arts and cultural fields in Asia and the West. The series aims to encourage critical thinking and to promote cross-cultural dialogue, exchange, and understanding to further the mission of the Asian Cultural Council. Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki and American film producer, writer and President Emeritus of Japan Society Boston Peter Grilli will share their experiences of living and working in both Japan and the U.S. over a span of fifty years, and their perspectives towards international cultural exchange and understanding for the future.

Asian Cultural Council (ACC) is a not-for-profit organization in the U.S. that works to advance international dialogue, understanding, and respect by supporting individual artists and specialists to pursue research, study, and creative work in the United States and Asia.

◇Profile◇
Fumihiko Maki
Fumihiko Maki was born in 1928 in Tokyo, Japan. He was both educated and taught at the University of Tokyo (BS Arch) and the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University (M. Arch).
Mr. Maki is the principal of Maki and Associates founded in 1965 in Tokyo and his practice covers projects in North and South America, Asia and Europe.
His many honorary memberships include the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Notable projects of Maki and Associates are Hillside Terrace (1969~92), Spiral (1985), Makuhari Messe (1989~95), The National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto (1986), and The Japanese Sword Museum (2018). Major international projects include 4 WTC in New York (2013~18), MIT Media Lab (2009), Aga Khan Museum in Toronto (2014), Mediacorp in Singapore (2016), Sea World Culture and Arts Center in Shenzhen (2017), The Bihar Museum in Patna (2017), and Aga Khan Center in London (2018).
Mr. Maki has been honored with many of the most prestigious architectural awards, including the Pritzker Prize, the UIA Gold Medal, and the Prince of Wales Prize in Urban Design in 1993, as well as the Praemium Imperiale in 1999 and the AIA Gold Medal in 2011.
His writings include Investigation in Collective Form (Washington University, 1964), Nurturing Dreams (MIT Press, 2008), and City with a Hidden Past (Kajima Institute Publishing, 2018). (Photo by Tohru Yuasa)

Peter Grilli
Peter Grilli was born in New York and raised in Tokyo from 1947 to 1959.
After receiving his earliest education at the American School in Japan, he went on to attend Harvard University, where he earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees. He also studied at Waseda University as a special student (1961-1963) and did graduate research at Tokyo University.
From 1970 to 1975, he was an editor at Weatherhill publishing company in Tokyo and New York. He then served for more than a decade as Director of Education, Film and Performing Arts at the Japan Society in New York. Subsequently, he headed the Japan Project at PBS and also established an independent consultancy in New York, specializing in media and intercultural communications. He served for four years as Director of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia University, and in 2000 was invited to become President of The Japan Society of Boston. After nearly fifteen years in that position, he is currently President Emeritus and Special Advisor to the Japan Society of Boston and Chairman of its Global Culture Center.
Peter Grilli is also a writer, filmmaker and consultant specializing on Japan, with particular focus on cultural affairs, film, performing arts, education, media and intercultural communications. In 2003, Mr. Grilli received the Third Class Order of the Sacred Treasure from the Japanese Government in recognition of his activities in cultural exchanges between Japan and the United States. In December 2009, he received the Shigemitsu Mamoru Award.
