Where Elephants Weep premiered in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, for 7 sold-out performances and became a popular and critical hit. One of the live performances was filmed by the Cambodian TV Station CTN. A hybrid orchestra featuring 27 traditional Cambodian instruments, and a modern Cambodian rock band flanked each side of the stage.
Sam, a refugee from the Khmer Rouge genocide, leaves the U.S. and returns to his homeland, Cambodia. Committed to finding his roots in his native culture, he unexpectedly falls in love with Bopha, a Cambodian popstar, and the lovers’ lives are changed forever. Loosely based on the traditional Cambodian story Tum Teav, the music fuses traditional Cambodian music with a Cambodian rock band, and rap.
