For decades, Cai has been fascinated by the wider universe and the unseen world, including feng shui, astrology, and the ancient Eastern philosophies behind them. “Primeval Fireball” (原初火球) refers to his landmark 1991 exhibition in Tokyo, and is a title that represented a merging of Cai’s understanding of astrophysics as well as a reflection on Laozi’s conception of the origin of the universe.

Cai's ongoing interest and exploration of cosmology is the core theme of “Ramble in the Cosmos.” The large-scale solo exhibition will present the artist’s early works from China, followed by his formative near-decade in Japan (1986-1995), subsequent time in the United States (1995-present), and elsewhere. New gunpowder paintings on glass and mirror will also be debuted.
