2003 Received Ordre des Arts et Lettres from the French Government.
Creates visionary paintings with polka dots and net patterns since childhood.
1957 Moves to the United States. Exhibits two dimensional works, soft sculptures and environmental sculptures using mirrors and electric lights.
Mid 1960 and after, stages various Happenings such as body painting, fashion shows and anti-war happenings.
1968 Kusama's Self Obliteration, a documentation film of Happenings which the artist scripted, directed and starred, receives a prize at the Fourth International Experimental Film Competition and the Ann Arbor Film festival.
1973 Returns to Japan. Begins to create novels and poems.
1983 The Hustlers Grotto of Christopher Street, a novel, receives the 10th Yaseijidai Literary Award for New Writers.
1993 45th Venice Biennial, solo exhibition at the Japanese Pavilion.
1998-99 Love Forever: YAYOI KUSAMA 1958-1968, Museum of Modern Art, New York and 2 venues in the United States and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
2000 Yayoi Kusama, toured five venues in Europe and two in Asia.
2004 Kusamatrix, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; Museum of Contemporary Art, Sapporo Artpark, Sapporo, Japan.
